The Octagonal Court — Laocoön and Apollo, the founding pair of the collections

🐍Laocoön and His Sonsc. 1st century BC – 1st century AD (dating debated) · Unearthed on the Esquiline Hill, RomeThe Trojan priest who warned "beware the horse," crushed by sea-serpents — unearthed in 1506, this group is the founding stone of the Vatican Museums themselves.🏹The Apollo Belvederec. AD 120–140 (Roman marble, conventionally after a Greek bronze) · Found in Italy (exact site uncertain)For three centuries it was "the most perfect statue in the world," and Winckelmann wrote aesthetics’ most famous eulogy to it — then taste turned, and it became a "cold copy." Taste, too, has a rise and fall.

🌄The Transfiguration1516–1520 · RomeRaphael’s last painting: he died on his thirty-seventh birthday, and the unfinished canvas was set at the head of his bier — for the next three centuries Europe called it the greatest painting in the world.
