Ⅰ · Ancient & Classical

Pyramids, temples, and a floating dome

The history of architecture begins with man defying time in stone. Over four thousand six hundred years ago, Imhotep stacked the first large stone structure — the Step Pyramid — for an Egyptian pharaoh. A thousand years later the Greeks, on the Athenian Acropolis, took proportion and beauty to the classical extreme with the Parthenon. The Romans, with arch, concrete, and Vitruvius’s theory, built vast spaces the Greeks could not imagine; and at Byzantium’s Hagia Sophia, a floating dome that seems hung from heaven wrote a brilliant close to the classical age.

Imhotep: The First Stone Pyramid

Around 2650 BC, the Egyptian vizier and architect Imhotep built the Step Pyramid at Saqqara for the pharaoh Djoser — the first large-scale stone structure in the world. He made real for the first time the idea of "building permanently in stone," and became the first named architect in history, revered as a god after death.

The Parthenon: Summit of Classical Proportion

From 447 BC, Ictinus and Callicrates built the Parthenon on the Athenian Acropolis. With countless barely-perceptible "optical corrections" (columns leaning in, swelling at the middle, base rising), they made the building appear absolutely straight and harmonious to the eye, building the classical pursuit of proportion and beauty into every block of marble.

Vitruvius’s Ten Books: Firmness, Utility, Beauty

Around 25 BC, the Roman architect Vitruvius wrote the West’s first complete architectural theory, The Ten Books on Architecture, holding that a building must have firmness, utility, and beauty. This triad is undated still; his enshrining of human proportion as architecture’s model inspired, fifteen centuries later, Leonardo’s "Vitruvian Man."

Hagia Sophia: The Floating Dome

In 537 AD, the mathematician-architects Isidore and Anthemius completed Hagia Sophia for the emperor Justinian. With curved "pendentives" they set a round dome firmly on a square, and opened its base full of windows so it seems weightless, hung from heaven. Justinian entered and marveled: "Solomon, I have surpassed you!"

Ⅱ · Medieval Sanctuaries

Making stone fly to the sky

Medieval Europe poured all its faith and skill into one thing: building a church as high and as light-filled as possible. Abbot Suger lit the first light of the Gothic at Saint-Denis, and thereafter Gothic cathedrals of pointed arch, flying buttress, and stained glass rose like forests of stone across Europe, ever higher, lighter, brighter. In the eastern Mediterranean, the Ottoman Sinan strove all his life to surpass Hagia Sophia, taking Islamic dome architecture to another peak.

Suger and the Birth of Gothic

Around 1140, Abbot Suger of Saint-Denis rebuilt the church, combining pointed arch, ribbed vault, and flying buttress so the walls grew thin and windows vast, sunlight pouring through great stained glass. He believed material light led to divine light — the soaring, light-filled Gothic space was born and swept Europe.

Amiens Cathedral: A Challenge to the Sky

From around 1220, the Amiens Cathedral designed by Robert de Luzarches was begun, its nave over forty metres, the tallest Gothic nave in France. The Gothic architects were obsessed with "higher, lighter, brighter," using ever thinner frames to hold ever larger windows, giving heavy stone a near-weightless upward thrust.

Sinan: A Mosque to Surpass Hagia Sophia

In 1575, the eighty-year-old Ottoman chief architect Sinan completed the Selimiye Mosque. The floating dome of Hagia Sophia was his lifelong rival and goal; this grand, transparent mosque let him say at last, with confidence: I have surpassed Hagia Sophia. Islamic dome architecture reached its peak.

Ⅲ · Renaissance & Baroque

Rediscovering proportion, dome, and drama

The Renaissance architects turned their eyes back to ancient Rome: they rediscovered classical proportion and rule, and took up again the ambition of the great dome. Brunelleschi, with a stroke of genius, covered the century-empty dome of Florence, opening the Renaissance; Palladio, with one book, spread classical beauty across two continents. In the Baroque, Bernini and Borromini made architecture move — stone surging, space flowing, light and shadow as drama, making a building a grand performance marshaling every sense.

Brunelleschi: The Great Dome of Florence

In 1436 Brunelleschi covered the huge dome of Florence Cathedral, empty for a century because no one could dome it. He invented a self-supporting "herringbone" brickwork, closing the dome ring upon ring without wooden centering. This red dome opened the Renaissance, and he also rediscovered linear perspective.

Palladio’s Four Books of Architecture

In 1570 Palladio published the Four Books of Architecture, setting out classical proportion and rule clearly and usably. Through it his style crossed the ocean, giving rise to centuries of "Palladianism" in Britain and America — from English estates to the White House and the Capitol, all his distant disciples.

Bernini and Borromini: Baroque Rome

In the mid-seventeenth century the lifelong rivals Bernini and Borromini took the Baroque to its peak in Rome: Bernini made St Peter’s Square with embracing oval colonnades, Borromini made church walls undulate like waves. They made architecture move, choreographing stone, space, and light as a grand drama of the senses.

Form follows function

Steel, glass, reinforced concrete, and the elevator brought architecture a change unseen in two thousand years. Sullivan raised skyscrapers in Chicago and cried "form follows function"; Le Corbusier declared "a house is a machine for living"; Mies purified architecture into a transparent glass box with "less is more"; and Gropius’s Bauhaus set the rules for all modern design. Meanwhile Gaudí grew natural curves back into building in Barcelona, and Wright cantilevered a house over a waterfall in America — modernism, between the poles of "machine" and "nature," reshaped the face of the whole twentieth-century city.

Sullivan: The Skyscraper and "Form Follows Function"

At the end of the nineteenth century, the steel frame and elevator let a building grow skyward without limit. Sullivan was first to ask in Chicago what this new building should look like, and cried the slogan that shaped all modern architecture, "form follows function" — a building’s form should honestly express its structure and use, not a classical dress. He was also Wright’s teacher.

Le Corbusier, Mies, Gropius: Modernism Arrives

In the 1920s the modernist movement arrived in full. Le Corbusier declared "a house is a machine for living" and set out the "Five Points"; Mies sought the minimal glass box with "less is more"; Gropius’s Bauhaus argued for design for the masses. In steel, glass, and concrete they wholly broke with the classical ornamental tradition.

Wright: Fallingwater

In 1937 Wright cantilevered Fallingwater directly over a waterfall, uniting building with rock, stream, and trees. He championed "organic architecture," that a building should grow naturally out of the earth. This became the most famous house of the twentieth century, and pointed cold modernism toward a path close to nature and to people.

Making architecture flow again

Into the contemporary, the computer and new materials made real the forms once only imaginable. Pei raised a pure glass pyramid before the Louvre, setting old and new in dialogue; Gehry, with twisting titanium curves, built the Guggenheim Bilbao — one building saved a city; Zaha Hadid freed architecture from the right angle to flow again; and Tadao Ando, with a cross of light, proved that "less" still has the most moving power. Contemporary architecture is both the dazzling landmark of a global age, and a fresh asking: for whom, and for what, should a building be built?

I. M. Pei: The Louvre Glass Pyramid

In 1989 Pei raised a modern glass pyramid at the center of the solemn old Louvre courtyard. Before it was built it drew huge controversy for "a modern triangle before a classical palace," yet it is now an inseparable symbol of Paris — a masterpiece setting the oldest and the most modern in a wondrous dialogue that completes each other.

Gehry: Guggenheim Bilbao and the "Bilbao Effect"

In 1997 Gehry, with shining titanium curves, built the wave-curling Guggenheim in the declining Spanish industrial town of Bilbao; tourists flocked in, and one building drove the revival of the whole city. The "Bilbao effect" thus became a term of its own: a striking landmark can change a city’s fate.

Ⅵ · Eastern Building

Another path of timber, bracket, and garden

While the West chased height and the dome in stone, the East took another path: with timber as its bones and bracket sets stacked outward, it built a spreading, horizontal architecture at one with nature. Yuwen Kai of the Sui planned a Chang’an to hold a million; Li Jie of the Northern Song set standardized rules for timber building in the Yingzao Fashi; Kuai Xiang of the Ming built the Forbidden City, and the Qing Lei family headed imperial design for eight generations; Ji Cheng, in the Yuanye, wrote the Chinese literatus’s garden ideal of "though made by man, as if opened by heaven." This Eastern building tradition runs on into the contemporary Japanese architecture of Tange and Ando.

Yuwen Kai: Planning Chang’an

From 582 AD the Sui architect Yuwen Kai planned and built the new capital Daxing (later Tang Chang’an). This strictly symmetrical city, holding a million people, was the largest, most advanced city of its day, and the model that East Asian capitals like Japan’s Heijō-kyō and Heian-kyō rushed to imitate.

Li Jie’s Yingzao Fashi: Standardizing Timber Building

In 1103 Li Jie of the Northern Song compiled the Yingzao Fashi, setting standardized rules for Chinese timber architecture — from material and structure to bracket sets and labor — with a module system "taking the cai as the ancestor." It let vast timber palaces be built by rule and efficiently, an Eastern classic answering the West’s Vitruvius.

Kuai Xiang: Building the Forbidden City

In 1420 the Forbidden City was essentially completed. The Suzhou "Xiangshan School" master Kuai Xiang directed and took part in this vast work, honored as "Kuai Lu Ban." He represents the ancient Chinese tradition of raising unrivaled palaces not by drawings but by apprenticeship and consummate skill.

Kenzo Tange: The Yoyogi Gymnasium

In 1964 the Yoyogi National Gymnasium Tange designed for the Tokyo Olympics was completed. He held up a wave-like undulating roof with an elegant suspension structure, fusing the flowing rhythm of traditional Japan with modern structure — hailed as one of the most beautiful buildings of the twentieth century, and a declaration of postwar Japan’s first-rate architecture.
