Beginner’s Guide

This is a beginner’s map of "how humanity has defied time and chased ideals through building." Fifty-three architects and master builders thread a main line from the pyramid to Bilbao: from Imhotep stacking the first stone structure, to the Greek Parthenon, the Roman dome, and the Gothic soar; from Brunelleschi’s Renaissance dome to Le Corbusier’s "machine for living" and Gehry’s titanium curves; and to the East’s other set of building methods, timber-boned and at one with nature. The goal is not to memorize which building is whose, but to see one question running throughout — in each age, what did people picture as the "ideal building," and why did it change.

Know These Few Things First

  • This universe’s main line can be summed up as "three things humanity keeps pursuing": greater height (the Gothic cathedral, the skyscraper), a larger interior space (the domes of Rome and Byzantium), and a form fitting the spirit of the age (from classical proportion, to modern function, to the contemporary flowing curve).
  • A tension running throughout is "ornament vs. structure": classical and Gothic architecture loved ornament, while modernism cried "less is more" and "form follows function," stripping ornament away; in the contemporary, architecture grew complex curves again through the computer. Grasp this swinging line and half the history of architecture has its skeleton.
  • East and West took two paths: the West chased height and the dome in stone, the East built a spreading, horizontal architecture at one with nature in timber and bracket sets (the Forbidden City, the garden). Neither is higher than the other — they are two great answers to the question of how a building should exist.
  • The "mentor/disciple" links in the graph mostly mean the influence of style and idea (Sullivan → Wright, Le Corbusier → Kahn, Koolhaas → Zaha); a "nemesis" (Bernini and Borromini, Wright and Mies) is often a head-on clash of directions.

A Few Suggestions

  1. Start with the timeline and grasp the great leaps: classical proportion (the Parthenon), the Byzantine floating dome (Hagia Sophia), the Gothic soar (Saint-Denis), the Renaissance rebirth (the Florence dome), the modernist revolution (form follows function), and the contemporary flow (Bilbao).
  2. Notice the cross-universe "meanwhile" — architecture always breathes with its age: Hagia Sophia (537) is nearly contemporary with the Code of Justinian; the Renaissance dome shares the Florence of the Medici bank and Leonardo’s paintings; modernism is bound up with the Industrial Revolution and two world wars.
  3. Focus on the cross-block links: Vitruvius → Brunelleschi (how the classical rules were rediscovered by the Renaissance), Louis Kahn → Tadao Ando (how the pursuit of light and material passed east), and Koolhaas → Zaha / Ingels (the mentor network of contemporary architecture).

How to Read

To grasp "what architectural fashion is really arguing about"

Follow the "ornament vs. structure" main line: the classical and Gothic took ornament to the extreme, but with the industrial age Sullivan, Le Corbusier, and Mies raised the modernist revolution, crying "form follows function" and "less is more," demanding that a building honestly express its structure and throw away all excess. Yet in the contemporary, Gehry and Zaha made architecture twist and flow again through the computer. You will find that the history of architecture is largely a swinging back and forth between "ornament or not, and who decides the form."

To see "the East has another set of methods for building the world"

Don’t fix only on the West’s stone and dome. Look at Li Jie’s Yingzao Fashi, Kuai Xiang’s Forbidden City, Ji Cheng’s Yuanye — long before the West, China had standardized timber building with a module system "taking the cai as the ancestor," built spreading great roofs with bracket sets, and conjured boundless landscape in a small space of garden. Read them alongside the West, and you will feel more deeply that the "ideal building" was never one answer.

To trace a line of "how technology frees form"

Watch how each structural breakthrough gave rise to new architecture: the arch and concrete let Rome build vast interiors, the pendentive let the dome float, the flying buttress let the Gothic church grow tall and bright, the steel frame and elevator sent the skyscraper soaring, reinforced concrete gave Le Corbusier his free plan, and computer parametric design finally made Zaha’s "drawable but unbuildable" curves real. Every step of technology frees form once more.
