Who they are

Sundar Pichai (1972– ) is an entrepreneur born in India and long working in the US, who became CEO of Google in 2015 and further CEO of parent company Alphabet in 2019. Under his tenure the two great AI research teams of Google Brain and DeepMind were formally merged into the unified "Google DeepMind" in 2023, integrating the company’s long-parallel AI research lines, a move seen as a direct response to the drastic change in the competitive landscape after ChatGPT’s release. Pichai thereafter vigorously drove the development and productization of the Gemini series of large models and gradually integrated generative-AI capability into Google search, the company’s most core cash-cow business, an integration that also provoked wide discussion of "whether AI will overturn the traditional search-engine business model," Google itself for a time also seen as slower than expected in its response in the early period after ChatGPT’s release, thereafter gradually catching up through heavier investment and organizational adjustment.

Merging Two Ace Research Teams to Meet a Belated Sense of Crisis

After ChatGPT’s release, Google was reported internally to have triggered a "code red"-level emergency response mechanism, as the generative conversational product was seen as possibly posing a fundamental threat to the company’s most core search-advertising business. Pichai thereafter directed the formal merger of the two top research teams of Google Brain and DeepMind, previously operating independently with sometimes overlapping and competing research directions, into the unified "Google DeepMind," an organizational adjustment widely read as a key step in Google’s attempt to concentrate its forces and speed its catching up with the industry’s competitive pace.
