Who they are

Demis Hassabis (1976– ) is a British computer scientist who in his youth was a chess prodigy, gaining the chess-master title at 13, then went into the video-game industry, taking part in developing several bestselling games, and after a doctorate in cognitive neuroscience co-founded DeepMind in 2010 with Shane Legg and Mustafa Suleyman, acquired by Google in 2014. The AlphaGo system he directed beat the top Korean Go player Lee Sedol four to one in 2016, proving that combining deep learning and reinforcement learning could crack Go, a domain previously seen as the last stronghold of human intuition, and DeepMind thereafter developed AlphaFold, which successfully cracked the protein-folding-structure prediction problem that had troubled biology for over half a century, able to predict a protein’s three-dimensional structure with high accuracy from its amino-acid sequence, a breakthrough already used by millions of researchers worldwide to speed drug development and basic biology. Hassabis, for the AlphaFold contribution, won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with team member John Jumper (shared with David Baker), one of the very few scientists recognized by major international prizes in both computer science and the natural sciences.

Hassabis gained the chess-master title at 13, and he often says it was precisely his childhood study of chess endgames that first made him realize "intelligence" might be broken down into a set of rules and strategies that could be understood and reproduced.
