Who they are

Alan Turing (1912–1954) was a British mathematician who in 1936 proposed the "Turing machine," an abstract model of computation giving a rigorous mathematical definition of "what is computable," a theory thereafter the foundation of modern computer science. During World War II he directed at Bletchley Park the breaking of the German Enigma machine, and the "Bombe" he designed greatly shortened the time to break ciphertext, work broadly held by historians to have significantly shortened the course of the war. In 1950 he published the paper "Computing Machinery and Intelligence," proposing the "imitation game" (later called the "Turing test") to sidestep the vaguely defined philosophical dispute of "whether a machine can think" and instead ask an operational question: whether a machine’s conversation can keep a person from telling it apart from a human. This paper is thereafter acknowledged as one of the earliest foundational documents of the field of artificial intelligence. Turing himself was homosexual, and in 1952 was prosecuted under British law that still criminalized homosexual acts, forced to undergo chemical castration as an alternative to imprisonment, and died two years later, the official verdict being suicide, at only 41. The British government formally apologized in 2009, the Queen signed a pardon in 2013, and in 2017 Britain legislated to posthumously pardon all men convicted under similar charges, a law also called "Turing’s Law."

A Question That Sidestepped the Dead End of "Can a Machine Think"

The question "can a machine think" is itself full of ambiguity — how to define thinking, and who is fit to judge. In his 1950 paper Turing simply gave up answering it and instead designed an operational alternative test: let a machine and a person both undergo a judge’s written questioning, and if the judge cannot reliably tell which is the machine, the machine passes. This turned an unfalsifiable philosophical question into an engineering question that could in principle be tested by experiment, and for over seventy years the "Turing test" has remained a popular reference for measuring language AI, even as scholarship keeps debating whether it truly measures "intelligence" itself.

The Wartime Codebreaking and the Belated Apology

The "Bombe" Turing directed the design of at Bletchley Park greatly compressed the time to break Enigma ciphertext from the days of manual search, giving the Allies a key intelligence advantage in decision-making. Yet after the war he was convicted under British law for his homosexuality, forced to undergo hormone treatment, and died two years later. The British government did not formally apologize until 2009 through then-prime minister Gordon Brown, the Queen signed a pardon in 2013, and in 2017 Parliament passed a law posthumously pardoning all convicted under similar charges, a rehabilitation over sixty years late, and Turing’s story is thereafter often taken as a classic case for discussing the gap between scientific contribution and social injustice.
