Jeff Dean (1968– ) is an American computer scientist who joined Google in 1999 and directed the design of several core large-scale distributed system architectures supporting Google’s early rise, including MapReduce and BigTable, hailed within the company and the industry as a legend of engineering ability, even giving rise to a great body of "Jeff Dean facts" in the manner of "programmer jokes" circulating among engineers. In 2011 he co-founded the Google Brain research team, systematically bringing deep-learning research into Google’s products and infrastructure, and thereafter directed the development of the widely used open-source machine-learning framework TensorFlow. The Google Brain team thereafter published the "Attention Is All You Need" paper in 2017, proposing the Transformer architecture, a paper born within the team Dean led that thereafter became the common underlying technical basis of almost all modern large language models. In 2023 the Google Brain team merged with DeepMind into the unified "Google DeepMind," and Dean moved to the post of Google chief scientist.
