Who they are

Satya Nadella (1967– ) is an entrepreneur born in India and long working in the US, who became CEO of Microsoft in 2014, having earlier directed the early development of the company’s cloud business Azure. Under his tenure Microsoft from 2019 made several rounds of strategic investment in OpenAI totaling billions of dollars, and deeply integrated OpenAI’s technical capability into Microsoft’s own core product lines such as Office, Bing search, and the Windows operating system, launching the Copilot series of AI assistants, a partnership widely seen as one of the most successful strategic bindings of a traditional tech giant and an emerging AI lab. During the 2023 OpenAI board crisis, Nadella publicly said he was willing to set up a separate research team within Microsoft for Altman and team members, a statement seen as one of the key factors in the crisis at last swiftly subsiding.
