Who they are

Sam Altman (1985– ) is an American entrepreneur, former president of the well-known startup incubator Y Combinator, who in 2015 co-founded OpenAI with Elon Musk and others, at first as a non-profit with the mission of "ensuring general artificial intelligence benefits all humanity." The OpenAI Altman led released ChatGPT in November 2022, bringing large-language-model technology for the first time to the mass market in a chat product anyone could use, its users breaking a hundred million within two months, then the fastest-growing consumer application in history. In November 2023 the OpenAI board for a time suddenly removed Altman as CEO on vague grounds, an act that shook the whole tech industry, several executives including co-founder Greg Brockman then resigning in protest, and over ninety percent of OpenAI’s employees co-signing a threat of collective resignation; five days later, under mediation, the board announced Altman’s reinstatement and a major reshuffle, and this governance crisis is widely seen as a classic case for examining the internal line divergence of this wave of the AI industry (the tension between the speed of commercialization and safety caution). Altman thereafter continued to drive OpenAI’s commercial restructuring and led large-scale investment in infrastructure such as chip manufacture and data centers.

Key stories

Two Months, a Hundred Million Users

At ChatGPT’s launch, OpenAI internally had no full expectation of the attention it might draw, the team even for a time worried it was only a "low-key research preview." The result was that its users broke a hundred million within two months of launch, then the fastest-growing consumer application in history, and "generative AI," a concept previously confined to academic and industry circles, truly entered the daily life and public discussion of the mass public for the first time.

Five Days, a CEO Removed and Reinstated

In November 2023 the OpenAI board suddenly announced Altman’s removal as CEO, the publicly stated reason vague, saying only that he "was not consistently candid in his communications with the board." This decision shook the whole tech industry, co-founder Greg Brockman resigning in protest, Microsoft saying it would welcome Altman and team members, and over ninety percent of OpenAI’s employees co-signing a threat of collective resignation and demanding the board resign and reinstate Altman. Five days later, under enormous pressure, the board at last compromised, Altman was reinstated, and the board was greatly reshuffled, this governance crisis later widely seen as a classic case for examining the internal divergence of the AI industry between commercialization and safety caution.

The "fired and reinstated in five days" corporate-governance caseThis crisis was thereafter widely cited by business schools and corporate-governance researchers as a classic case for discussing "the tension between a non-profit governance structure and a commercialized entity."
