Who they are

Mira Murati (1988– ) is an engineer born in Albania and long working in the US, who joined OpenAI in 2018 and thereafter became CTO, directing the development of several core products such as ChatGPT and DALL-E from research prototype to mass product, one of the core leaders of the company’s technology and product teams. During the November 2023 crisis when the board suddenly removed Sam Altman as CEO, Murati briefly served as interim CEO, playing a key transitional role in this five-day governance crisis. In September 2024 Murati announced her departure from OpenAI and thereafter founded the AI startup Thinking Machines Lab, continuing her exploration in frontier AI research.
