Who they are

Marvin Minsky (1927–2016) was an American cognitive and computer scientist who in 1959 co-founded the MIT AI Laboratory with John McCarthy, one of the most important representatives of the symbolist school of AI. His 1969 book Perceptrons, co-authored with Seymour Papert, used rigorous mathematical proof to point out a structural limit of the single-layer perceptron model Frank Rosenblatt had proposed (unable to learn nonlinearly separable logical operations such as "XOR"), a conclusion thereafter widely held to be one of the direct causes of the sharp shrinkage of neural-network research funding and the entry into a decade-long "AI winter," though Minsky himself later said this consequence was not his intent, and later editions of the book added that multi-layer networks could in theory overcome this limit. In his later years Minsky proposed the "society of mind" theory, holding that intelligence is not the product of a single mechanism but emerges from the cooperation of a great many simple, individually un-"intelligent" tiny agents. He won the Turing Award in 1969.

The book Perceptrons used mathematical proof to point out that Frank Rosenblatt’s single-layer perceptron could not learn simple nonlinear logical operations such as "XOR," a conclusion the academic world of the time widely read as "the neural-network path is a dead end," directly causing this field to be all but cut off from research funding for over a decade, the first "AI winter." Minsky later said this widespread pessimistic reading in a sense misread his intent — the book actually also mentioned that multi-layer networks could in theory overcome this limit, but at the time there was neither enough compute nor an effective way to train multi-layer networks, a gap not filled until the backpropagation algorithm was rediscovered over a decade later.
