Who they are

Isaac Asimov (1920–1992) was a science-fiction writer and biochemistry professor born in Russia and raised in the US, who in 1942 first proposed in a short story the "Three Laws of Robotics" — a robot may not harm a human, must obey human orders (unless it conflicts with the first law), and must protect its own existence (unless it conflicts with the first two laws) — a fictional ethical framework thereafter proven highly forward-looking, and though itself literary creation rather than engineering norm, it continued to inspire the way researchers in AI safety and ethics thought about the real question of "how to set behavioral constraints for intelligent systems" over the decades after. Asimov himself knew several real AI researchers including Marvin Minsky, who served as science adviser to the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Asimov also wrote commentary on this classic film exploring the risk of AI loss of control, science fiction and real scientific research in his generation showing a rare mutually nourishing relationship.
