Who they are

Kai-Fu Lee (1961– ) is an entrepreneur and computer scientist born in Taiwan and long working in the US and China, who in his early years did speech-recognition research during his doctorate at Carnegie Mellon University, then held senior posts at Apple, Microsoft, and Google, becoming president of Google China in 2005. In 2009 he founded the venture-capital firm Sinovation Ventures, long focused on supporting Chinese domestic AI startups, one of the most important drivers of the Chinese AI venture ecosystem. His 2018 book AI Superpowers systematically expounded the differences in the AI development paths of China and the US, holding that China had unique advantages in data scale, richness of application scenes, and engineering execution, an analytical framework thereafter widely cited and discussed. Lee is also one of the earlier well-known tech-industry figures to publicly share his own cancer experience, an experience that prompted him thereafter to discuss more in public the relationship between AI and human value and the meaning of life.
