Who they are

Robin Li (1968– ) is a Chinese entrepreneur who founded Baidu in 1999, and in his early years while working in the US had already filed a "hyperlink analysis" technology patent, one of the important theoretical bases of later search-engine ranking algorithms, sharing many affinities in idea with the PageRank algorithm of Google founder Larry Page, the order and mutual influence of the two also somewhat discussed in the industry. Li thereafter led Baidu to become the long-time dominant player in the Chinese search market, and from the mid-2010s vigorously invested in AI, hiring Andrew Ng as chief scientist, one of the earliest representative cases of a top international AI researcher systematically joining a Chinese tech company. Baidu thereafter released large-language-model products such as Ernie, one of the early main participants in the Chinese large-model industry.

Bringing Silicon Valley’s Top AI Scientist Back as Chief Scientist

Li in 2014 hired Andrew Ng as Baidu chief scientist, seen at the time as one of the landmark events of a Chinese tech company systematically bringing in top international AI research talent, Ng during his time at Baidu directing the building of the company’s deep-learning research institute, and the mark of this cooperation can be seen in Baidu’s later work in several AI subfields such as speech recognition and autonomous driving.
