Who they are

John Logie Baird (1888–1946) was a Scottish engineer who in 1925 successfully publicly demonstrated in a London department store the world’s first television system able to actually transmit a recognizable image of a person, a system relying on a high-speed rotating disk with a spiral of holes to mechanically scan and reconstruct the image point by point, called "mechanical television." He thereafter continued to improve this system and was the first to achieve the world’s earliest public television broadcast experiment at the BBC, and also early explored an early technical scheme for color television image transmission. Yet the mechanical television system, limited by the physical rotation speed of the disk and the hole density, had an inherent bottleneck of image resolution and stability hard to break, and thereafter, as Philo Farnsworth and others across the Atlantic developed electronic television systems working wholly by vacuum-tube technology without the physical limit of mechanical rotation speed, the mechanical-television technical path gradually lost the competition with the electronic scheme and was at last wholly replaced and superseded. Though Baird did not win out in this dispute of technical paths, his historical standing as the earliest public demonstrator and commercialization pioneer of television — the key technology that changed the shape of twentieth-century mass media — is still widely acknowledged and commemorated.

The First Public Demonstration in a Department Store

In 1925 Baird set up his self-made crude equipment in Selfridges department store in London and publicly demonstrated to the gathered customers the real-time transmission of a human face by television signal, and though the picture was blurry and of very low resolution, this demonstration was still the first public successful showing in human history of "television," a technical concept that had previously existed only in science-fiction imagination, and Baird thereafter continued to improve the equipment and successfully persuaded the BBC to support public television broadcast experiments.

The Mechanical Disk Lost to the Vacuum Tube

Baird’s mechanical television system relied on a high-speed rotating holed disk to scan and reconstruct the image point by point, and the rotation speed and hole density of this mechanical device had a hard-to-break physical limit, its image resolution and stability never comparable to the all-electronic television systems developed by Philo Farnsworth and others; this dispute of the "mechanical" and "electronic" technical paths at last ended with the all-electronic system winning out and mechanical television eliminated, but Baird’s historical contribution as the earliest public demonstrator of television technology was not thereby erased.
