The Teenage Inventor vs. the Industry Giant
Farnsworth at 21 successfully developed an all-electronic television prototype and patented it, yet thereafter fell into years-long litigation over patent rights with the powerful RCA, which even for a time tried to prove that the scheme Farnsworth conceived in his youth lacked technical feasibility; though the court at last ruled Farnsworth held priority, RCA, with capital and marketing resources far beyond an individual inventor’s, at last held absolute dominance in the wave of television commercialization, and Farnsworth’s foundational contribution long failed to gain matching public recognition.
