Who they are

Philo Farnsworth (1906–1971) was an American inventor who, by tradition, at 14 while plowing a potato field at his home in Utah, drew inspiration from the sight of the neatly arranged furrows and conceived the principle of television transmission — dissecting an image into electric signals by line-by-line scanning and recombining them into a picture — and at 21 successfully demonstrated the world’s first television image transmission and reception system working wholly by electronic means (rather than the earlier reliance on mechanical devices such as rotating disks). This "image dissector" technical scheme was thereafter proven the correct direction of television development, mechanical television systems, for the hard-to-overcome physical limits of resolution and image stability, at last wholly replaced by electronic television. Yet Farnsworth thereafter fell into years-long litigation with the powerful Radio Corporation of America (RCA) over the ownership of the core television patents, and though the court at last ruled Farnsworth held priority and RCA was forced to pay licensing fees, RCA, with capital and marketing resources far beyond Farnsworth’s own, at last held absolute dominance in the commercialization and brand recognition of the television set, and Farnsworth’s historical contribution for a considerable time after failed to gain public recognition and commercial return matching his foundational technical standing.

By Farnsworth’s own recollection, at 14, helping to plow with a horse-drawn plow on a Utah farm, looking at the neatly arranged furrows of the field, he suddenly thought that a television image might, like plowing, be scanned line by line and dissected into a series of electric signals for transmission and then recombined line by line into a complete picture at the receiving end — this plain analogy from field labor at last truly became the key theoretical starting point of his whole electronic television transmission system.
