Who they are

Louis Daguerre (1787–1851) was a French stage-scenery painter and inventor who, collaborating with Joseph Niépce, who had earlier done related optical-chemical experiments, and continuing to improve it alone after Niépce’s death, at last in 1839 publicly released a practical photographic technology called the "daguerreotype" — coating a silvered copper plate with a light-sensitive silver-iodide layer, developing it after camera exposure with mercury vapor, and fixing it with a salt solution, able to record and fix a real scene relatively clearly and stably long-term on this metal plate. This was the first photographic technology in history of true commercial practical value, able to be widely used by ordinary people, and the French government then bought out the patent and released it free to the whole world, a generous act that greatly sped the swift spread of photography across Europe and America. The birth of photography for the first time gave humanity the ability to record real images objectively and precisely by mechanical-chemical means rather than manual painting, a technical breakthrough that thereafter not only profoundly changed news reporting, historical record, and artistic creation, but whose core principle of photosensitive imaging also provided an important technical source for the later development of film and early television imaging.

A Developing Process Sped by an Accidental Discovery

By tradition, in continually improving the photographic developing process Daguerre once casually stored a batch of underexposed, seemingly failed plates in a cabinet holding the residual mercury of a broken thermometer, and days later, taking them out to look, was astonished to find clear images had appeared on these plates — from which he realized mercury vapor had the unique chemical action of speeding development, and this accidental discovery was thereafter systematically integrated into the complete photographic process he at last publicly released.

The French Government Bought the Patent and Released It Free

After Daguerre developed practical photography, the French government, recognizing the far-reaching value of this invention to science, art, and the way society records itself, actively paid to buy out the daguerreotype patent and then released the technology completely, allowing anyone in the world to use it free without paying a licensing fee — this rare handling of "government buyout then free release" greatly sped the swift spread of photography across Europe and America, and this precedent was later often seen as a viable model for handling technological inventions of great public value.
