Who they are

Alan Turing (1912–1954) was a British mathematician who in a 1936 paper proposed the "Turing machine," an abstract model of computation, rigorously defining "what is a computable problem" with extremely simple rules, laying the most core theoretical cornerstone of modern computer science — before Turing, "computation" was more a vague concept of mathematical operation, and the Turing machine first gave a mechanized, formally provable theoretical framework of computation, so that every computer actually built thereafter is in essence a physical realization of this theoretical model. During World War II he led the design at Bletchley Park of an electromechanical cryptanalytic machine called the "Bombe," successfully breaking the German "Enigma" cipher, and historians broadly hold this contribution may have shortened the war by more than two years, saving countless lives. After the war he further proposed the "Turing test," exploring whether a machine can display behavior that may be deemed "intelligent," a pioneering document of the philosophy of artificial intelligence. Turing himself, for his homosexuality, was in 1952, under British law that still criminalized homosexual acts, convicted of "gross indecency" and forced to undergo hormone treatment amounting to chemical castration, and two years later died of cyanide poisoning, the official verdict being suicide; only in 2013 was he formally pardoned by the British crown.

An Abstract Machine That Defined "Computation" Itself

Turing conceived an extremely simplified hypothetical machine: an infinitely long tape, a read-write head that could read and write symbols and move along the tape, and a finite set of state-transition rules — with this minimal device alone he proved that almost any computational process that can be clearly described could be executed by this machine, and this "Turing machine" model thereafter became the axiomatic starting point of the whole theory of computer science, Turing thereby honored as the "father of computer science."

The Secret War at Bletchley Park

During World War II Turing led the design at the Bletchley Park codebreaking center of the electromechanical cryptanalytic machine the "Bombe," which through systematic elimination greatly shortened the time needed to break the German Enigma cipher, letting the Allies grasp German submarine deployments and battle plans in advance — this work was classified for decades after the war, and Turing never in his life could make public this contribution that saved countless lives, his achievement unknown to the public in his lifetime.
