Who they are

Wilbur Wright (1867–1912) and Orville Wright (1871–1948) were brothers of Dayton, Ohio, who ran a bicycle repair and manufacturing business, and, with self-taught aerodynamic knowledge and much wind-tunnel experimental data, on 17 December 1903 at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, flew their self-built "Wright Flyer" to complete the first sustained, controlled, self-powered human flight in history, the first flight lasting only 12 seconds over a distance of about 36 meters, yet a true watershed in aviation history. Their most crucial technical breakthrough was not the engine itself but the pioneering principle of "three-axis control" — achieving lateral roll control through wing-warping, combined with rudder and elevator, so that the craft could actively keep its balance and turn in the air, a control logic that thereafter became the basic paradigm of almost all fixed-wing aircraft design. The two brothers had no formal engineering education, and solved, purely by the mechanical intuition of their bicycle business and systematic self-directed experiment, the problem of flight-stability control that many contemporary researchers, including early aviation pioneers, had failed to crack.
