Who they are

George Cayley (1773–1857) was a British engineer and baronet who, as early as the start of the nineteenth century, about a century before the Wright Brothers achieved powered flight, already systematically studied the aerodynamic principles of flight by scientific method, first clearly distinguishing "lift" (keeping the craft aloft), "drag" (the air friction hindering the craft’s advance), and "thrust" (the power driving the craft forward), which had long been conflated, and proposing that a fixed wing combined with an independent propulsion device was the correct technical path to sustained controlled flight, rather than the "ornithopter" idea many contemporaries still doggedly pursued of mechanically imitating a bird’s flapping wings. He designed and built several unpowered glider models for repeated experiment, and in 1853 successfully had a manned glider complete a brief gliding flight, very likely the first successful manned heavier-than-air flight in history (though this glider itself had no sustained power). Cayley was also the earliest theoretical forerunner of using a fixed wing and tail with rudder and elevator to achieve flight-attitude control, the basic design paradigm of later aircraft, and the Wright Brothers themselves publicly acknowledged being deeply inspired by Cayley’s earlier theoretical works.

Distinguishing Lift, Drag, and Thrust

Before Cayley, most exploration of flight still rested on the intuitive idea of imitating a bird’s flapping wings, while Cayley, by rigorous scientific analysis, first clearly distinguished the three wholly different physical forces of the lift that "raises" the craft, the drag that hinders its "advance," and the independent thrust that drives it forward, and clearly pointed out that a fixed wing should be used to produce lift, combined with an independent propulsion device for forward power, rather than vainly trying to mechanically copy a bird’s wing-flapping motion — this theoretical insight thereafter became the basic starting point of all fixed-wing aircraft design.

A Manned Glide That May Have Been the "First in History"

In 1853 an unpowered glider the octogenarian Cayley designed and built completed a brief manned gliding flight at his estate, the pilot (by tradition Cayley’s coachman) successfully gliding across a small valley; though this glider itself had no sustained power, it was very likely the first successful manned heavier-than-air flight in human history, providing important pioneering theoretical and practical groundwork for the Wright Brothers’ achievement of true powered manned flight nearly half a century later.
