Who they are

Stephanie Kwolek (1923–2014) was an American chemist long employed at DuPont’s materials research lab, who in 1965, in an experiment, handed a previously widely dismissed "failed" cloudy, milky-white polymer solution (by the experience of the time an ideal spinnable solution should be clear and transparent) to a colleague for spinning tests, and accidentally found the fiber spun from it was astonishingly strong, with a tensile strength over five times that of steel wire at equal weight, and this high-performance aramid fiber thereafter named "Kevlar" was thereby born. Kevlar fiber, with its unique material properties of extreme lightness yet great toughness and wear resistance and good high-temperature performance, was thereafter widely applied in bulletproof vests, bulletproof helmets, and other personal protective equipment, and in tire reinforcement, aerospace structural parts, fiber-optic cable protective layers, and many other industrial fields with exceedingly strict demands on strength-to-weight ratio, and this invention is estimated to have since saved the lives of tens of thousands of law-enforcement officers and soldiers worldwide. Kwolek herself was low-key and modest, always stressing that this major discovery benefiting countless lives owed largely to her not hastily discarding an experimental sample that by conventional standards should have been judged a "failure" but insisting on further probing the value it might hold, and this rare curiosity and patience in research was precisely the key to this accidental discovery at last coming true.

A Failed Sample That "Looked Wrong"

By conventional judgment Kwolek held that an ideal spinnable polymer solution should be clear and transparent, but the solution she made in this experiment was cloudy and milky-white with abnormally low viscosity, and by the lab’s usual standards such a sample would usually be judged a failure and discarded; but Kwolek, on research intuition, insisted on handing this "wrong-looking" sample to a colleague for further spinning tests, and at last accidentally found the fiber spun from it far exceeded expectations in strength, and Kevlar fiber was thereby born.

A Material Invention That Saved Countless Lives

Kevlar fiber, with a tensile strength far exceeding steel wire and extreme lightness, was thereafter applied on a large scale as the core material of police and military bulletproof vests, bulletproof helmets, and other personal protective equipment, and this invention is estimated to have, since it appeared, directly saved the lives of law-enforcement officers and soldiers in countless real violent confrontations, and Kwolek in her later years, speaking of this invention, always held it the proudest and most humanly valuable contribution of her career.
