Who they are
Marie Curie (1867–1934) was born in Warsaw, Poland, and, because Polish women were then barred from higher education, went alone to the University of Paris to study, joining her husband Pierre Curie in the deep study of the radioactivity of uranium ore discovered by Becquerel, and, after years of grueling manual refining, isolating from tons of pitchblende waste ore two previously unknown radioactive new elements — polonium (named for her homeland Poland) and radium — and systematically proposing the term and theoretical framework of "radioactivity" to describe the spontaneous decay of certain elements’ atomic nuclei releasing energy. She thereby became the first person in history, and to this day the only one, to win the Nobel Prize in two different scientific disciplines, physics and chemistry. Radioactivity research thereafter profoundly drove the development of medical imaging, cancer radiotherapy, nuclear power, and even archaeological and geological dating. Marie Curie herself, for long handling radioactive materials without protection, in her later years suffered from aplastic anemia caused by the accumulated damage of radioactive materials, and died of this illness in 1934; the notebooks she used are still strongly radioactive and must be kept in specially made lead-shielded containers, researchers signing a waiver and wearing special protective gear to consult them.

Elements Refined From Tons of Ore Slag
To confirm and isolate the new radioactive elements, the Curies, in an exceedingly crude experimental shed, handled by hand as much as several tons of pitchblende waste ore, and after years of repeated chemical separation and purification at last refined only about 0.1 grams of pure radium sample — this exceedingly grueling manual labor at last brought the confirmed discovery of the two radioactive elements "radium" and "polonium" wholly unknown to humanity before.
