Who they are

Rudolf Diesel (1858–1913) was a German engineer who long studied how to raise the thermal efficiency of the internal-combustion engine, and in 1893 proposed a wholly new working principle needing no spark-plug ignition but rather compressing air highly to raise its temperature sharply and thereby directly igniting the injected fuel, thereafter called the "diesel engine." The thermal efficiency of this compression-ignition engine was far higher than the contemporary Otto-cycle gasoline engine, and its fuel adaptability broader, and it was thereafter applied on a large scale to ships, railway locomotives, heavy trucks, and even industrial generating equipment and other scenes with high demands on fuel efficiency and sustained output power, and is still one of the mainstream power solutions in global freight and heavy machinery. Diesel’s own end is an unsolved case in the history of technology: in September 1913 he mysteriously vanished on a voyage across the English Channel to London, and days later a body of hard-to-confirm identity was found at sea, the official verdict inclining to accidental fall or suicide, but since his trip coincided with sensitive negotiations with the British navy over using the diesel engine for submarine power, various unconfirmed conspiracy theories have circulated around the event.

An Engine Without a Spark Plug

The working principle Diesel conceived was wholly different from the by-then-widespread gasoline engine — relying not on a spark plug to ignite but first compressing air to extremely high pressure to raise its temperature above the fuel’s auto-ignition point, then injecting the fuel into this mass of hot, high-pressure air to ignite of itself; this "compression" rather than "spark" working principle made the diesel engine’s thermal efficiency markedly higher than the contemporary gasoline engine, the core technical advantage by which the diesel later long dominated heavy transport and industrial power.

The Mystery of the Disappearance on the English Channel

On the night of 29 September 1913 Diesel took a mail steamer from Antwerp, Belgium, to London, and the next morning the crew found his cabin empty and he had vanished for good; a body was recovered at sea days later, but, soaked for days, could not be fully identified, and the officials at last gave no conclusive verdict; since the disappearance coincided with his negotiations with the British navy over using the diesel engine for submarine power, the event has since been shrouded in unconfirmed conspiracy theories, one of the famous unsolved mysteries in the history of technology.
