Who they are

Nikolaus Otto (1832–1891) was a German inventor who in 1876 successfully developed the first practical internal-combustion engine working on the four continuous strokes of "intake, compression, power, exhaust," and this working principle thereafter called the "Otto cycle" achieved a marked leap in fuel efficiency and operational reliability over the earlier low-efficiency, bulky internal-combustion engine designs, and is the basic working principle still used to this day by the great majority of gasoline engines, including those of automobiles and motorcycles. Otto himself was in his early years a grocery salesman with no formal engineering education, self-made purely by keen interest in mechanical principles and continual study, and during it had close technical collaboration with the engineer Gottlieb Daimler (later a co-founder of Daimler-Benz). After Otto’s four-stroke engine principle appeared, it directly cleared the key technical road for Karl Benz and others to apply it to road vehicles and invent the true modern automobile, and the four-stroke internal-combustion engine thereby became another epoch-making power-technology breakthrough of the Second Industrial Revolution after the steam engine.

Otto in his early years made his living selling groceries and had no formal engineering education, yet held a keen self-study interest in the then-newly-rising internal-combustion engine technology, and through repeated experiment and continual improvement at last established the engine principle of the four continuous strokes of "intake, compression, power, exhaust" — this experience of "an amateur self-made who at last established an industry-basic paradigm" is another example of the typical experience of the many non-academic inventors of the nineteenth-century Industrial Revolution.
