Who they are

Guglielmo Marconi (1874–1937) was an Italian inventor who, on the basis of the earlier electromagnetic-wave theory and experiments of Hertz, Tesla, and others, systematically used radio waves for long-distance information transmission, in 1895 successfully achieving wireless telegraph transmission over about 2.4 kilometers at his family estate, and in 1901 going further to transmit a wireless signal across the Atlantic, from Britain to Newfoundland in Canada, over about 3,400 kilometers, proving that radio waves could break the theoretical limit widely held by the physics of the time to be blocked by the earth’s curvature (later research explained this as the reflection of radio waves by the ionosphere). Marconi was not a theoretical physicist; his core contribution lay in engineering realization and commercialization — through continual improvement of antenna design and transmitting and receiving apparatus, he turned wireless telegraphy from a laboratory phenomenon into a reliable, scalable, practical communication system, and founded the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company to bring it to market, this system thereafter widely applied in ocean-ship and military communication; in the 1912 sinking of the Titanic, it was precisely the distress signal sent by the ship’s Marconi wireless telegraph that let nearby ships come in time to rescue survivors. He won the 1909 Nobel Prize in Physics for these contributions.

A Transatlantic Experiment Thought "Impossible"

In 1901 Marconi set up a giant antenna in Cornwall, England, and tried to send a wireless signal across the Atlantic to Newfoundland in Canada, about 3,400 kilometers away; the mainstream physics of the time widely held that the earth’s curvature would block the straight-line path of electromagnetic waves, so the experiment was in theory impossible to succeed, but Marconi’s team did receive the transatlantic signal — a phenomenon fully explained only after the later establishment of ionospheric theory, that the high-altitude ionosphere can reflect radio waves like a mirror, letting them travel around the earth’s curvature to farther places.

The Distress Signal of the Titanic

After the Titanic struck an iceberg in 1912, the operator of the ship’s Marconi wireless telegraph immediately sent the international "CQD" and the new "SOS" distress signals, received by the nearby liner Carpathia, which came in time to the scene to rescue some 700 survivors — this disaster also prompted nations thereafter to legislate that ocean ships must carry wireless communication equipment and dedicated operators, and wireless telegraphy thereby went from a novel technology to a life-safety necessity of infrastructure.

Version differences

The dispute over patent priority between Marconi and Tesla in radio technology was long-standing, and a 1943 US Supreme Court ruling held some of Marconi’s patents invalid, finding Tesla had earlier had the relevant technical scheme, but by then Marconi was dead, and this ruling had limited effect on his historical reputation established in life.
