Joseph Marie Jacquard (1752–1834) was a weaver of Lyon, France, who in 1804 invented a Jacquard loom that automatically controlled the interweaving pattern of warp and weft threads through a series of punched cards — the arrangement of holes on each card corresponding to specific weaving-pattern instructions, the loom automatically weaving complex, exquisite figured patterns by the order of cards read in turn, without, as before, relying on a weaver’s assistant to pull the warp threads one by one by hand, greatly lowering the production cost and labor demand of complex figured fabrics. This design idea of "storing and reading operational instructions with a series of replaceable cards" was of significance far beyond textiles itself — more than half a century later, when Charles Babbage designed his mechanical computing device the "Analytical Engine," he directly drew on the punched-card principle of Jacquard as the means of program and data input, an origin that leads the Jacquard loom to be often acknowledged by the history of computing as one of the earliest actual applications of the core idea of the "programmable machine." When Jacquard’s invention first appeared, for fear the new technology would put many traditional handweavers out of work, it met fierce resistance from the local weaver community of Lyon, and there were even violent conflicts of angry workers smashing looms and Jacquard himself once physically threatened.
