Who they are

Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806–1859) was one of the most representative engineers of the British Victorian age, who directed the design and building of the Great Western Railway connecting London and the southwest of England, its tunnels, viaducts, and works such as the Clifton Suspension Bridge still in use today, representing the peak of nineteenth-century civil engineering. He insisted on a "broad gauge" wider than the "standard gauge" George Stephenson advocated, holding that broad gauge could give a smoother, faster ride; this "gauge war" ended at last with standard gauge legally enforced across all Britain, and Brunel’s broad-gauge system was thereafter forced to be gradually dismantled and rebuilt, a rare major setback in his engineering career. He also directed the design and building of three ocean steamships that were technical marvels of the time — the "Great Western," the "Great Britain," and the "Great Eastern" — of which the "Great Eastern" was the largest ship in the world at its launch and thereafter laid the first successful transatlantic submarine telegraph cable, becoming the key infrastructure that made transoceanic, transcontinental telegraph communication possible.

The "Gauge War": The Battle Brunel Lost

Brunel firmly believed a wider gauge would let trains run more smoothly and fast, and so adopted a seven-foot "broad gauge" on the Great Western Railway, set against the standard gauge George Stephenson advocated that later became the global mainstream; the British Parliament at last legislated in 1846 to enforce standard gauge, and Brunel’s broad-gauge network took decades thereafter to be gradually dismantled and rebuilt — this "gauge war" is a classic historical case of how a dispute over engineering standards is at last decided by political and legislative means.

The "Great Eastern" and the Transatlantic Telegraph Cable

The steamship "Great Eastern" Brunel designed and built had a displacement far exceeding other ships of its time at launch, a true "engineering of the century"; this great ship was thereafter converted to lay the transatlantic submarine telegraph cable, in 1866 successfully completing the laying of the first stably working transatlantic cable, so that telegraph communication between Europe and North America went from relying on weeks of voyage to pass messages to near-real-time telecommunication.
