Who they are

Thomas Edison (1847–1931) was an American inventor and entrepreneur who formally registered over a thousand patents in his life, his most representative contribution being the development in 1879 of a practical incandescent bulb using a carbonized bamboo filament that could stay lit for over a thousand hours — before him several inventors had made early prototypes of the incandescent lamp, but all failed to be commercialized for too-short lifespan or too-high cost, and Edison’s team, by systematically testing over a thousand filament materials, at last found a solution of real practical value. His more far-reaching contribution was pioneering the "industrial research laboratory" as an organizational model: building at Menlo Park, New Jersey, a team of engineers, chemists, and machinists, turning invention from a haphazard process reliant on individual genius into a sustainable, organized, systematic industrial process, a model that thereafter became the organizational template for the research departments of almost all large twentieth-century enterprises. He also built a complete direct-current power system from generation and transmission to user-end lighting, and thereby formed a long antagonism in the "War of the Currents" with Tesla, who advocated the alternating-current system.

A Thousand Materials, Just to Find One Filament

To find a durable incandescent-lamp filament material, Edison’s team systematically tested over sixteen hundred materials including platinum wire, carbonized paper, and carbonized bamboo, at last determining that carbonized bamboo had enough durability and economy to stay lit over twelve hundred hours — this methodology of "large-scale systematic trial and error" thereafter became the hallmark distinguishing the industrial laboratory from the individual inventor’s flash of insight.

The War of the Currents: The Business Duel With Tesla

Edison vigorously promoted the direct-current power system he had invested in, while Nikola Tesla and the industrialist George Westinghouse advocated the alternating-current system better suited to long-distance transmission; the two sides waged a years-long business and public-opinion duel, the Edison side even publicly electrocuting animals to play up the danger of alternating current, but in the end, for AC’s marked advantage in long-distance transmission efficiency, the Westinghouse-Tesla side won the "War of the Currents," and alternating current thereafter became the mainstream standard of the global power system.

Version differences

Whether Edison was the "inventor" of the incandescent lamp is historically debated: several inventors before him had made early prototypes, and the core contribution of Edison’s team was systematically testing to find a filament material combination of commercial practical value, not "invention from scratch" itself.
