Who they are

Antoine Lavoisier (1743–1794) was a French chemist who, through a series of precise experiments stressing quantitative weighing, overturned the then widely held erroneous theory that combustion released a mysterious substance called "phlogiston," proving instead that combustion is in essence a chemical reaction of the combustible with the oxygen in the air, and systematically proposing the "law of conservation of mass" that the total mass of substances stays unchanged before and after a chemical reaction, a law thereafter the fundamental cornerstone of all modern chemistry and chemical-engineering quantitative analysis. He also led the establishment of a systematic, logically clear naming system for chemical elements and compounds, replacing the earlier chaotic, alchemy-tinged naming habit, and the core logic of these naming principles is still the basis of modern chemical nomenclature. Lavoisier himself was of wealthy birth and had served as a tax farmer collecting harsh levies, and after the outbreak of the French Revolution this identity got him charged as an "enemy of the people" in the Jacobin-led "Reign of Terror"; though several scientists jointly petitioned the court to be lenient for his outstanding contribution to science, the judge left the cold verdict "the Republic has no need of scientists," and in 1794 Lavoisier was sent to the guillotine at only fifty, the mathematician Lagrange sighing afterward, "It took them only an instant to cut off that head, but a hundred years may not suffice to grow another like it."

Lavoisier was the first chemist in the history of chemistry to insist on carefully weighing the total mass of reactants and products with a precise balance before and after each experimental step, and by this method of extreme emphasis on quantitative measurement he conclusively proved that the total mass of matter stays unchanged before and after a chemical reaction, thereby overturning the long-circulated but never rigorously verified "phlogiston theory"; this plain yet profound principle of "conservation of mass" thereafter became the fundamental premise on which all modern chemistry could be built on a rigorous quantitative basis.
