Who they are

Ada Lovelace (1815–1852) was the daughter of the poet Lord Byron, given from childhood a strict mathematical education deliberately arranged by her mother (who hoped thereby to suppress the "poetic wildness" she might have inherited from her father). After coming to know the mathematician Charles Babbage, she studied deeply his designed "Analytical Engine" (a conception of a mechanical general-purpose computing device based on gears and cards, never actually built), and was commissioned to translate into English an Italian paper introducing the Analytical Engine; in translating she added notes even longer than the original text, expounding in detail the complete operational steps for using the Analytical Engine to compute the Bernoulli numbers, a specific mathematical problem — these notes are broadly held by later ages to be the first "program" in history designed for a general-purpose computing machine, and Lovelace is thereby recognized as the world’s first computer programmer. In the notes she also strikingly foresaw that such machines might in the future process not only numbers but music, images, and any content that could be formally encoded, an insight of "the computer being more than a calculator of numbers" fully borne out only more than a century later when modern computers truly spread. The US Department of Defense thereafter named a general-purpose programming language "Ada" in commemoration of her contribution.

Lovelace was commissioned to translate a French paper by the Italian engineer Menabrea introducing Babbage’s Analytical Engine, and after finishing the translation she additionally wrote detailed notes nearly three times the length of the original, her "Note G" listing in detail the complete operational steps for using the Analytical Engine to compute the sequence of Bernoulli numbers — this supplement, appearing as a "note" yet far exceeding the original in length, is acknowledged by later computer historians as the world’s first algorithm program written for a general-purpose computing device.

The Ahead-of-Its-Time Conjecture That "Machines Can Process Anything"

In her notes Lovelace boldly conceived that if the computing power of the Analytical Engine were properly used, it might in the future be applied not only to numerical computation but to composing music or processing images and any content that could be turned into formalized symbolic rules — a conception near-fantastical in the mid-nineteenth century, yet precisely foreseeing the picture of "universal computation" that the modern general-purpose computer would truly realize more than a century later.

Version differences

Whether Lovelace should be regarded as the "first programmer" is variously held by some historians of technology, who hold Babbage himself may have had a similar conception, but mainstream scholarship still acknowledges the independent original value and historical standing of her detailed notes.
