Wife of Abraham, Mother of Isaac
The Hebrew Bible records that Sarah was the wife of Abraham, old and childless, who once gave her maidservant Hagar to her husband as a concubine to obtain an heir; after Hagar bore Ishmael, Sarah miraculously bore the promised son Isaac at ninety, and thereafter, fearing Ishmael would threaten Isaac’s inheritance, demanded that Abraham drive Hagar and her son from the household. Sarah is seen in the Jewish and Christian traditions as an important female patriarch of "faith receiving the promise."
Three mysterious visitors came to Abraham’s tent and foretold that Sarah would bear a son the next year; Sarah, already ninety, heard from within the tent and laughed to herself, thinking she and her husband too old for such joy, but the visitors asked, "is anything too hard for the Lord?" The next year Sarah indeed bore Isaac — and the name "Isaac" means "laughter."
