Before anything began, there was only Chaos — not a god so much as a yawning gap, a formless void. From within it, Earth, Abyss, and Night rose of their own accord. The English word "chaos" is his name, though it originally meant "chasm."
Hesiod’s Theogony opens: "First of all Chaos came into being." No creator god, no blueprint — Gaia the Earth, Tartarus the Abyss, and Nyx the Night simply emerged one after another from the void. The Greek cosmos was not built; it grew itself.
