Night itself, born of Chaos, dwelling in the depths of Tartarus. Alone she bore Sleep, Death, the three Fates, and the Furies — nearly everything inescapable in human destiny is her child. Homer says even Zeus dared not provoke her.
Sleep, acting on Hera’s orders, lulled Zeus and caused disaster, then fled beneath his mother Nyx’s dark robes. Zeus pursued to her doorstep, saw the goddess of Night, and drew back — the Iliad says he "stood in awe of Night." She alone in all of myth could make Zeus halt.
