The Xuanwu Gate Incident
The struggle for the succession between the heir Jiancheng and Prince Shimin had reached life and death. On the fourth of the sixth month, 626, Li Shimin laid an ambush at Xuanwu Gate with Zhangsun Wuji, Yuchi Gong, and others, shot his elder brother Jiancheng dead with his own hand, and Yuchi Gong killed Yuanji; then, in armor, he entered the palace to "protect" Emperor Gaozu. Three days later Li Shimin was made crown prince, and two months later took the throne. In old age he insisted on seeing the court historians’ record, and reading the passage on Xuanwu Gate, demanded "a straight record of the matter" — this posture of facing his own stain was itself politics.
