Muhammad al-Khwarizmi (c. 780–c. 850) was a Persian mathematician who worked at the "House of Wisdom" in Baghdad (an academic research institution funded by the Abbasid caliphs), whose chief work The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing systematically expounded general methods for solving linear and quadratic equations; the Arabic "al-jabr" in the title (meaning "restoration," i.e., moving the negative terms of an equation to the other side) evolved, through Latin translation, into the modern word "algebra," and his own name, in Latinized transliteration, gave rise to "algorithm," a core term of modern computer science. He also systematically introduced and spread the decimal numeral system originating in India (today’s globally used "Arabic numerals," in fact originating in India, called "Arabic numerals" by Europeans only after they were brought to Europe through the works of Arab scholars such as al-Khwarizmi); this numeral system thereafter replaced the Roman numerals earlier in use in Europe, greatly simplifying mathematical calculation and commercial bookkeeping, one of the most far-reaching cases of knowledge transmission in the history of human mathematics.

The word "al-jabr" in the title of al-Khwarizmi’s chief work, through Latin translation, became "algebra," the internationally common name for modern algebra; his own name "al-Khwarizmi," transliterated by medieval Latin scholars as "Algorithmi," thereafter further evolved into "algorithm," a core term of modern computer science — the name of a ninth-century Baghdad mathematician thus accidentally became the direct etymological source of two of the most basic concept-words shaping the modern digital world.
