Who they are

Aryabhata (476–c. 550) was an ancient Indian mathematician and astronomer whose chief work the Aryabhatiya, written in exceedingly concise verse Sanskrit, systematically expounded trigonometric functions, a precise approximation of pi (to four decimal places), methods for solving quadratic equations, and a complete decimal place-value counting system, one of the earliest important documents in which Indian mathematics could systematically use "zero," a revolutionary concept (though the use of "zero" as a placeholder may be earlier, Aryabhata’s systematic exposition of its mathematical status is of milestone significance). He also boldly proposed the conjecture that the earth rotates once daily, causing the apparent "rising in the east and setting in the west" of the sun, moon, and stars, an insight some thousand years before Copernicus proposed heliocentrism, and though he did not wholly deny the overall geocentric framework of the cosmos, this local astronomical insight was strikingly forward-looking by the standards of the world of his time.

The Precise Calculation of Pi

In his work Aryabhata gave the approximate value of pi as 3.1416, precise to four decimal places, and explicitly noted that this was an "approximation" and not an exact value — this clear awareness of the approximate nature of mathematics was quite rare in the world mathematical history of the time, and his calculation was thereafter spread through the Indian mathematical tradition to the Arab world and, further, influenced the development of medieval European mathematics.

The Bold Conjecture of the Earth’s Rotation

Aryabhata proposed that the apparent motion of the sun, moon, and stars rising in the east and setting in the west that we observe is in fact an illusion caused by the earth rotating once daily on its own axis, rather than the heavenly bodies truly revolving around a stationary earth — an astronomical insight some thousand years before Copernicus’s heliocentrism, though it did not provoke a fundamental overturning of the overall geocentric cosmology in the Indian astronomical tradition of the time.

Version differences

Whether Aryabhata’s conjecture of the earth’s rotation is equivalent to Copernicus’s later "heliocentrism" is read differently by scholars: most hold that he proposed only the local insight of the earth’s rotation and did not, like Copernicus, systematically deny the overall geocentric framework, and the two should not be simply equated.
