Who they are

James Watson (1928– ) and Francis Crick (1916–2004) were respectively an American biologist and a British physicist who met and began collaborating at the Cavendish Laboratory of Cambridge University in 1951, together devoting themselves to cracking the three-dimensional structure of the DNA molecule, then the most watched unsolved problem in biology. The two integrated the then-known chemical composition patterns of DNA (Chargaff’s rules), crystallographic modeling technique, and the key X-ray diffraction photograph "Photo 51" taken by Rosalind Franklin and privately shown by their colleague Maurice Wilkins, and in 1953 successfully built the three-dimensional model of the DNA molecule as a double helix — two complementary long chains of nucleotides winding around each other by specific base-pairing rules — a structural model that at a stroke answered the mystery of how the DNA molecule stably stores genetic information, its "double-strand complementary" feature also intuitively revealing the physical mechanism by which the DNA molecule can precisely self-replicate in cell division. This discovery is acknowledged as one of the greatest breakthroughs in twentieth-century life science, formally opening a wholly new era of the vigorous development of molecular biology, genetic engineering, and modern biotechnology. Watson and Crick, together with Franklin’s colleague Maurice Wilkins, received the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, while Franklin’s key contribution to this discovery long failed to gain due public recognition for a considerable time after her death.

A Molecular Model Built of Cardboard and Wire

Watson and Crick did not do new experiments of their own but relied mainly on systematically integrating existing chemical and crystallographic evidence and repeatedly building physical structural models by hand to test their conjecture — cutting cardboard to mimic base shapes, bending wire to build the skeleton — and through much trial and error, tearing down and starting over, at last confirmed that the structure of two complementary long chains winding as a double helix with precise base pairing was the only answer that could satisfy all the known experimental evidence at once.

A Not-Wholly-Honorable Acquisition of Data

Watson and Crick’s ability to at last confirm the DNA double helix owed largely to their colleague Maurice Wilkins privately showing them the key X-ray diffraction photograph "Photo 51" taken by Rosalind Franklin without her knowledge, and this data-sharing manner, quite controversial at the time and without the subject’s consent, was thereafter long a classic case cited in the history of science’s reflection on the topic of "how scholarly contribution should be properly acknowledged and credited."

Version differences

The way Watson himself later depicted Franklin in his memoir The Double Helix is broadly held by later ages to bear marked gender bias and unfair evaluation, textual evidence often cited in criticism when scholarship later reexamined this history.
