Who they are
Robert Hooke (1635–1703) was an English scientist and architect whose interests and talents spanned physics, biology, astronomy, and architectural engineering, one of the most versatile core members of the seventeenth-century English Royal Society. His "Hooke’s law" — that within the elastic limit an elastic material’s deformation is proportional to the applied force — is one of the most basic physical laws describing the mechanical behavior of all elastic materials such as springs, beams, and bridge structures, and is still among the first basics taught in mechanical- and structural-engineering courses. He was also a pioneer of microscopy, in 1665 publishing Micrographia, in which the honeycomb-like tiny cavities he observed under the microscope in a thin slice of cork he first named "cell," a term still used to this day as the core concept describing the basic structural unit of an organism in all life science. Hooke had long, sharp personal grudges and priority disputes with Newton, the two at odds on optics theory, the priority of the inverse-square law of gravitation, and more, and Newton in his later years used his power as Royal Society president to suppress to a degree the due evaluation of Hooke’s historical contribution; Hooke’s own portrait mysteriously vanished in the course of later history, and his true appearance can now no longer be definitely established.

Through repeated experiment observing the deformation of elastic materials such as springs and metal wire under force, Hooke proposed that within the elastic limit a material’s deformation is in simple direct proportion to the applied force, and this seemingly plain, simple law thereafter became one of the most basic and indispensable physical laws in all mechanical and structural engineering for analyzing the force-and-deformation behavior of springs, beams, columns, bridges, and building structures.
The First Man to See a "Cell"
Hooke, observing a thin slice of cork with his self-made microscope, found it full of neatly arranged, regularly shaped tiny honeycomb-like cavities, and, reminded of the small rooms monks lived in at a monastery, named these tiny cavities "cell" (originally meaning "small room"); this term was thereafter used by science to this day, becoming the core conceptual starting point in all life science for describing the cell — the most basic structural and functional unit of an organism.
Version differences
Hooke’s true appearance cannot be definitely established, his portrait having mysteriously vanished in the course of history, and some historians hold this may be related to Newton’s suppression of Hooke’s historical image during his Royal Society presidency, but the exact reason is still without conclusion.
