Who they are

James Watt (1736–1819) was a Scottish instrument maker who, while repairing a Newcomen steam engine model for the University of Glasgow in 1765, realized that this type of engine had to cool and reheat the whole cylinder after each stroke, wasting much fuel and heat, and thereby conceived the key improvement of the "separate condenser" — moving the condensation to a chamber separate from the main cylinder, so that the main cylinder could stay always hot, multiplying fuel efficiency several times over. Watt partnered with the industrialist Matthew Boulton to found Boulton & Watt, systematically commercializing this improvement, and later developed rotary output, a centrifugal governor, and other supporting improvements, extending the steam engine from its earlier single use mainly for pumping water from mines to a universal power source able to drive textile machinery, ships, locomotives, and almost every industrial scene, the core technical engine of the First Industrial Revolution. The unit of power, the "watt," is named for him.

The Insight in a Glasgow Park

By Watt’s own recollection, one Sunday afternoon in 1765, walking on a public green in Glasgow, he suddenly grasped the key idea of the "separate condenser" — moving the condensation of the steam from the main cylinder to an independent chamber kept always cool, so that the main cylinder need not be cooled and reheated each working cycle, greatly raising fuel efficiency; this idea thereafter became the starting point of his life’s work of technical improvement.

The Commercialization of Boulton & Watt

Watt himself was skilled at engineering conception but lacked the resources and knack of business, and in 1775 partnered with the Birmingham industrialist Matthew Boulton, Boulton providing capital, connections, and a manufacturing works and Watt handling continual technical improvement; their partnership model thereafter became a model case of the Industrial Revolution’s "complementary strengths of technical inventor and business industrialist," and the Boulton & Watt steam engine was thereby spread to factories and mines across Britain and the European continent.
