Charles Goodyear (1800–1860) was an American inventor long obsessed with solving the material defect that severely limited the practical value of natural rubber — "sticky, soft, and smelly in summer heat, stiff and brittle in winter cold" — and after nearly a decade of repeated failed experiments, in an accident in 1839 he carelessly dropped a rubber sample mixed with sulfur onto a hot stove, and found afterward that this accidentally baked rubber, far from melting and charring as expected, had become tougher and could keep a stable elasticity through changes of hot and cold — this accidentally discovered "vulcanization" process, by heating to form cross-links between sulfur atoms and rubber molecular chains, fundamentally solved the material defect of natural rubber’s lack of practicality. Vulcanized rubber technology thereafter became an indispensable foundational process of the modern rubber industry, and above all the key material precondition for the later large-scale spread of the automobile industry — without vulcanized rubber tires that could bear violent temperature change while keeping stable elasticity, the practicality of the automobile as a means of transport would have been greatly diminished. Goodyear himself, for weak patent defense and poor business management, was mired in poverty and debt all his life and never gained the commercial return his far-reaching invention deserved; the Goodyear Tire company founded in 1898 and named in tribute to his surname had no direct equity relation to him.
