Who they are

Bi Sheng (c. 970–1051) was an engraver of humble station in the Northern Song, and according to Shen Kuo’s Dream Pool Essays, he invented clay movable-type printing around 1040: carving individual Chinese characters on blocks of clay, hardening them by fire, then arranging and combining them as needed into a forme, which after printing could be broken up and reused, without carving a whole block for each page of content as in block printing. This idea of "removable, recombinable type" was the first technical breakthrough in printing history to wholly separate "content" from "carrier," and though later improved through wooden and metal type, its core logic never changed. Bi Sheng himself was of low station, has no biography in the official histories, and almost all information on his life comes from this one note-like record of Shen Kuo — a situation common in the study of ancient Chinese science and technology, where the names and deeds of many important inventors survive only through scraps of scattered documents.

A Full Set of Type, Broken Apart Is Another Book

Bi Sheng made thousands of single-character clay type, stored classified by rhyme in wooden trays, and when a page needed printing the craftsman took the corresponding type from the store by the content of the text, arranged them into a forme, and after printing broke them up and returned them to their places to reset the next page — this idea of "standardized modules plus recombination on demand" thereafter became the common logical starting point of the evolution of printing technology worldwide.

An Inventor Lost to the Official Histories

Bi Sheng’s life is found only in the few hundred words of Shen Kuo’s Dream Pool Essays, the official histories leaving almost no biographical information on him, and today his dates, native place, and even his exact station rest largely on later scholars’ scrutiny of this single note — an invention that profoundly changed the course of human civilization, yet the historical record of its inventor so thin; this contrast is not rare in the history of technology.

Almost all of Bi Sheng’s life depends on this one note-like record of Shen Kuo, his exact dates, native place, and identity details lacking other independent corroboration, and modern scholarship still has room for scrutiny of some details.
