Who they are

A veteran minister of four Wei reigns, who with a lifetime’s patience outlived three generations of sovereigns — Cao Cao, Cao Pi, Cao Rui — and then seized real power over Wei in the coup at Gaoping Tombs. Matching Zhuge Liang many times, he wore down the edge of Shu’s northern campaigns by refusing to give battle, a textbook practitioner of "wait out the enemy for the moment to change." He never took the throne himself, but his grandson Sima Yan finally usurped Wei to found Jin — "the Three Kingdoms return to Jin" was, in truth, a return to the House of Sima.

The War of Attrition With Zhuge Liang

Through Zhuge Liang’s repeated northern campaigns, Sima Yi understood that Shu’s supply lines were long and its advantage lay in swift battle, so he held his walls and refused to come out, enduring every taunt — even accepting the woman’s dress Zhuge Liang sent to shame him as "fearing Shu like a tiger" — to keep his army steady. In the end Zhuge Liang died at Wuzhang Plains and the Shu army was forced to withdraw. The legend that "a dead Zhuge scared off a living Sima Yi" is exaggerated, but this war of attrition was indeed one Sima Yi won by patience.

The Coup at Gaoping Tombs

In 249, Sima Yi seized the moment when the regent Cao Shuang accompanied the emperor out of the city to sweep the imperial tombs, launched a coup to take control of Luoyang, then executed Cao Shuang and his faction, hollowing out the Wei imperial house and monopolizing army and state. Before he struck, he had "feigned illness" and lain low for years, playing the part so well that even Cao Shuang’s confidants thought him a dying old man — endurance carried to the utmost, then a single lethal stroke.
