Leaving Wei for Shu, Receiving the Art of War
At Zhuge Liang’s first northern campaign, Jiang Wei was still a Wei staff officer at Tianshui; suspected by his governor of collusion with the enemy and left with nowhere to turn, he defected to Shu. Zhuge Liang, seeing him "deeply versed in the meaning of war, and loyal and diligent in the affairs of the age," prized him greatly and taught him his lifetime’s art of war, regarding him as his successor. That a defector could win such esteem from Zhuge Liang — and go on to bear the whole weight of Shu Han’s military — says much.
