Defeating the Demon Raktabija
Hindu tradition records that as the goddess Durga fought the demons, her wrath gave birth to Kali to help slay them. Legend says that in the killing Kali grew ever wilder, almost beyond her own control, until Shiva lay down at her feet; startled to find herself treading on her husband, she stuck out her tongue in self-check and quelled the destructive force — this posture is the source of Kali’s most classic image.
