"Bodhi Originally Has No Tree"
The fifth patriarch Hongren bade his disciples each compose a verse to show their level of practice. The senior disciple Shenxiu wrote, "the body is a bodhi tree, the mind a bright mirror’s stand; time and again wipe it clean, and let no dust alight." Hearing this, Huineng had someone write in answer, "bodhi originally has no tree, the bright mirror is also no stand; from the first there is not a single thing, where could dust alight?" Hongren judged this verse closer to the sudden awakening of "illuminating the mind and seeing one’s nature," and secretly transmitted the robe and lineage to Huineng by night.
