One of Hinduism’s Three Great Gods, "the Creator"
In Hindu tradition, Brahma is the creator of the cosmos, usually depicted with four faces and four arms, holding the Vedic scriptures, a rosary, and a lotus. Though exalted among the three great gods of "creation-preservation-destruction," in the everyday worship of contemporary Hinduism, temples to Brahma are far rarer than those to Shiva or Vishnu — traditional explanations vary, one being that his work of creation is done, so devotees incline more to worship Shiva and Vishnu, who still actively sustain and transform the world.
Hindu tradition records that Brahma was born from a lotus growing from Vishnu’s navel, and at once set to creating the cosmos, all beings, and time itself. The four Vedas he holds symbolize that all knowledge springs from his creation.
