Master of the Luo school; "nature is principle"
Cheng Yi (1033–1107), with his brother Cheng Hao founded the "Luo school," teaching that "nature is principle" and that cultivation lies in reverence and the extension of knowledge through the investigation of things. Carried on by Zhu Xi, his thought became the "Cheng-Zhu" orthodoxy of the Yuan, Ming and Qing.
When disciples came for instruction and found Cheng Yi sitting in meditation, they waited outside until he stirred — by then the snow was a foot deep. "Standing in the snow" became the byword for reverence toward a teacher.
