Who they are

Anaximander (c. 610–546 BC) was an ancient Greek philosopher of the Milesian school, Thales’s student and an important intellectual breakthrough beyond him. Unsatisfied with his teacher’s concrete, material answer that "water is the first principle of all things," he proposed instead that the first principle of all things is an abstract existence definable by no concrete sensory quality (hot or cold, wet or dry) — the "boundless" (apeiron, meaning "the unlimited" or "the undefinable") — all things of the world being differentiated and derived from this boundless first principle and in the end returning to it, a cycle of generation and destruction he described as all things "making requital to one another for their injustice according to the assessment of time." This abstract conception of the first principle displayed, a step further than Thales’s concrete material answer, the philosophical breakthrough of early Greek philosophy evolving from concrete experience toward abstract conceptual speculation, and he is the earliest known Greek philosopher to have left written fragments.

The Abstract Breakthrough of the "Boundless"

Anaximander held that if the first principle of all things were some concrete substance (such as water or fire), the concrete quality of that substance itself would contradict the opposite qualities among things (for instance, the wet quality of water cannot account for the existence of dry things), and therefore the true first principle must be the "boundless" that transcends all concrete determination — this speculative breakthrough from the concrete to the abstract is seen by many historians of philosophy as the true beginning of the Western metaphysical tradition of "seeking an abstract ultimate reality beyond sensory experience."

Anaximander proposed strikingly prescient conjectures on cosmic evolution, holding that the earth hangs at the center of the universe needing no support (because, being equidistant from all sides, it has no reason to tilt toward any one), and he also conjectured that life first arose in water and that human ancestors passed through an early fish-like form — conjectures that, though lacking an empirical basis in the modern scientific sense, display the grand ambition of the early Greek natural philosophers to explain the origin of the cosmos and of life systematically by rational speculation.
