God of the World-Encircling Sea
The eldest Titan, embodiment of the vast freshwater current encircling the whole world — the Greeks believed the earth was ringed by a great river. With his wife he fathered three thousand river-gods and three thousand ocean-nymphs; every river in the world is his child. The English word "ocean" comes from him.
When the war of the Titans broke out, Oceanus was the only elder Titan who refused to fight, staying quietly in his waters at the edge of the world. When the dynasty changed, he kept his domain — myth uses him to say: not every god of the old order must sink with it.
