Titan of Light, Father of Sun, Moon, and Dawn
The Titan of light whose name means "he who walks on high." By his wife Theia he fathered Helios the sun, Selene the moon, and Eos the dawn — all three lights of the sky came from his house. He fought in the war of the Titans and was cast into Tartarus.
In an old tradition, four Titans stood at the four corners of the world holding up the sky, and Hyperion guarded the East — the direction of sunrise. His name later became a byword for the sublime; Keats’s long poem "Hyperion" is about this fallen lord of light.
